Voice and video troubleshooting

Microphone permissions on Windows and macOS step by step, device selection, echo, noise and screen sharing fixes.

Last updated:

If people can’t hear you, or you can’t hear anyone, one of the steps below usually fixes it.

Try these first

  1. Is the microphone icon in the sidebar crossed out? Then you are muted; click it to unmute.
  2. In Settings › Voice & Video, make sure the right input and output devices are selected.
  3. Start the Mic test on the same page and speak; the level bar should move.
  4. Unplug and replug your headset, then restart the app.

Microphone permission in the browser

Click the lock icon in the address bar, set Microphone to Allow and reload the page. If the prompt never appeared, the microphone may be blocked for MOODS in your browser settings.

Microphone permission on Windows (step by step)

  1. Open Start › Settings (Windows key + I).
  2. Go to Privacy & security › Microphone.
  3. Make sure Microphone access is on.
  4. Turn on Let apps access your microphone.
  5. For the desktop app, also turn on Let desktop apps access your microphone. In a browser, check that your browser is allowed in the list.
  6. Under System › Sound › Input, check that the right microphone is selected and its volume isn’t down.
  7. Quit and reopen MOODS.

Microphone permission on macOS (step by step)

  1. Open System Settings from the Apple menu.
  2. Go to Privacy & Security › Microphone.
  3. Find MOODS (desktop app) or your browser in the list and turn the switch on.
  4. If the app isn’t listed, try joining a voice room in MOODS; macOS shows the prompt then.
  5. For screen sharing, also turn on Screen & System Audio Recording in the same place.
  6. After changing a permission, quit MOODS completely (Cmd + Q) and reopen it.

Echo and background noise

  • Use headphones instead of speakers.
  • In Settings › Voice & Video, make sure Echo cancellation and Noise suppression are on. In the desktop app, Advanced noise suppression also removes keyboard and fan noise.
  • Try Push-to-talk instead of an always-open mic. In the desktop app the key works while you’re in game; in a browser it only works while the MOODS tab is focused.

Screen sharing

  • Browsers limit screen sharing quality. Use the desktop app for 1080p60 with game audio.
  • If your share is black on macOS, check the Screen & System Audio Recording permission.
  • If the share stutters, lower the resolution to 720p or the frame rate to 30.

Connection problems

If audio is choppy, check the connection indicator. If you see High ping or Packet loss, switch to a wired connection, turn off your VPN and pause other large downloads.
